Biomonitoring

I am working on a project studying the effects of urbanization on watersheds in the San Francisco Bay Area using macroinvertebrates as bioindicators.

Malformed Amphibians

I have studied amphibian malformations caused by a trematode parasite (Ribeiroia ondatrae) since 1998. This multihost parasite causes limb malformations in numerous species of amphibians across the United States. Field and laboratory work conducted with Pieter Johnson (http://www.colorado.edu/eeb/facultysites/pieter/index.htm) demonstrated that this parasite was the cause of malformations in nine amphibian species in the western United States, including Pacific treefrogs and western toads. I will be investigating the effect of light, temperature, and nutrients on snail host abundance at Hopland Research and Extension Center.

Stormwater Ponds

While stormwater management manuals purport that stormwater ponds and wetlands provide habitat for wildlife, there has been no investigation of this in Northern California. I will document the insect and amphibian communities in these sites and determine what water quality, structural, and management factors limit and promote species richness.
