Biology and management of structural and house-hold pests.

Research Interests

I am a Cooperative Extension Specialist. Although I have statewide responsibilities, I am housed on the Berkeley Campus. The duties of my job include conducting applied research and outreach. My research focuses on household and structural insect pests. Particularly, termites and wood boring beetles of the home. I am often involved in testing the latest detection and control techniques before they are commercialized in the State. My outreach activities include public speaking, responding to phone calls and letters, and pest identifications for many public groups in California.

For questions pertaining to termites and other household pests in California you can contact the CAL Termite webpage at http://www.cnr.berkeley.edu/lewis.

For general inquires on insects contact the CityBugs webpage at http://nature.berkeley.edu/citybugs/

Current Projects

My current lab and field activities focus on the evaluation of subterranean termite baits. However, I am also involved in cooperative studies that explore the natural biology and ecology of termites in California. Other projects include evaluating detection devices for drywood termites. I am also involved in the creation and updating of an United Nations Environmental Program website that features a global perspective of termite biology and management (http://193.247.37.2/pops/termites/termite_intro.htm)
